Creating your own Augmented Reality Experience – Zapworks

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality is a way to for students to have an interactive experience of objects or things in the real world (Alkhattabi, 2017; Hernandez Hernandez & Reyes Ruiz, 2018). This could mean scanning a picture, and having the entire solar system pop out in front of you!

While at first glance, it may seem like it is only used for fun and games, with its interactive element, it can be used in education, and is a great way for students to have an exciting learning experience (Alkhattabi, 2017; Lee, 2012). Augmented reality other than increasing motivation and engagement can also benefit students learning, enhancing their learning environment, and help them acquire key skills such as organising, searching and evaluating data and information.

While augmented reality has seen some use in learning, there is an increasing demand to utilise and adopt this technology for education (Lee, 2012). Many AR technology already has the potential to be applied in an education setting and in the classroom, and creates an environment where students are not restricted in their learning, providing a way for them to interact, manipulate and create something (Wu, Lee, Chang & Liang, 2013).

What does Zapworks do?

Zapworks allows you to create your very one unique code that you can put on any image, either digitally or even physically. The code can be embedded onto anything with texts, images, sounds and even videos that students can acces by just using the zappar app. Teachers are able to use this to provide students with an immersive and interactive experience that can increase student motivation (Hernandez Hernandez & Reyes Ruiz, 2018; Safar, Al-Jafar & Al-Yousefi, 2016).

Students can also similarly create something using their own zapcode, not only does this help them create a more engaging learning environment, but they are also encouraged to express their creativity and provide them the opportunity to make their own unique discoveries for their learning (Lee, 2012).

(Check out the Zapwork that I have already created in the first picture if you haven’t already using the Zappar app!)

AR by itself is also extremely versatile, you can choose to create something simple and to the point, or something that is complex and elaborate depending on what you need while also benefiting student learning. While ther are also costs associated with more complicated and costly AR technology, there are also many free AR programs available online such as zapworks (Safar, Al-Jafar & Al-Yousefi, 2016; Wu, Lee, Chang & Liang, 2013). Teachers also need to be able to accept the shift in teaching methods in order to succefully integrate AR technology such as zapworks in the classroom (Wu, Lee, Chang & Liang, 2013).

  1. A helpful review of Zapwork of explaining VR and Zapwork. The blog has a good focus on engagement and motivation for students to learn and provide free thinking learning environment. You have slightly mentioned Zapwork can foster creativity, however not in a in-depth manner. AR not only enhance engagement and motivation, but also allows students practice their high order thinking skills, which included critical thinking and creative thinking ability. Overall, great work.
